Jeff, You're way ahead of me on peak oil, I'll get back to you on that when I catch up. On the nuclear future, just went to a global renewable energy conference the view is still that nuclear is necessary. Better designed plants, maybe different technologies (like TerraPower, with its alternative type of nuclear reactor that runs on natural or depleted uranium) but nothing can beat nuclear as a base load power source; not even cheap natural gas, potentially volatile with environmental issues unresolved.

Abby,
Would like to hear your take on the "peak oil" debate. I read several books recently on the topic, the only one I liked was "A Thousand Barrels a Second" by Peter Tertzakian. Almost everyone argues that greater reliance on nuclear must be part of the future, but with the Japanese crisis will that still be true?

Interesting stuff, Abby. $6.50/watt is an eye-opener for nuclear considering solar can be close to $4. What is it about US nuclear that makes it so much more expensive? Insurance? Greater subsidies overseas?

Hi Abby,
Do we actually need direct sunlight, or will just light from a covered sky do? Because, when e.g. in front of the mirror in our bathroom, I see the light from a small window throwing a skewed glimmer on it and along that sharp line the vapor is gone. Which means that the light alone produces enough energy for resolving the vapor.
Just wondering.
